We Outside is a striking exhibition by Nigerian-Australian photographer Ayooluwatomiwa ‘Ibukun’ Oloruntoba, capturing the resilience, identity, and creativity of African-Australian youth. Through powerful photography, the visual documentary showcases event spaces created by and for young African-Australians in Melbourne, offering a rich and complex perspective on their evolving identity within Australian society. Oloruntoba’s black-and-white 35mm film images emphasise the strength of community, blending an observational style with an undeniable intimacy that reflects his active role as both a documentarian and advocate.
By highlighting these spaces and what it means to be African-Australian, We Outside not only celebrates cultural expression but also advocates for its continued recognition and support. The project serves as a testament to the importance of these environments, engaging event organisers to uncover the challenges they face, their motivations, and the resources needed to ensure these spaces thrive.
